Kindergartners love reading about animals, and pets are the animals they know best. The my pets reading comprehension test collection gathers nine short, cheerful stories about a horse, a dog, a fish, a cat, a hamster, a lizard, a rabbit, a pig and a snake into one printable pack. Each story is followed by five multiple-choice questions, so young readers practise reading carefully and then showing what they understood, one pet at a time.
About This Collection
The my pets reading comprehension test collection is twenty pages. It opens with a cover page that has a colored-pencil picture of a puppy, a kitten and a bunny in a sunny backyard and a table of contents listing all nine stories with their page numbers. Each of the nine stories then fills two pages: a passage page with a full-color picture and a short story in large type, and a questions page with name and date lines and five fill-in-the-bubble questions with three choices each. One combined answer key for all nine stories, forty-five answers in all, is the last page. The stories use short sentences and familiar words, which makes these kindergarten reading comprehension worksheets a good fit for guided reading, literacy centres, homework, or a quick check of reading progress.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Ask children to point to the sentence that proves each answer. When all nine stories are finished, let each child pick a favorite pet and draw it, then tell a partner how to take care of it. Because the questions look like simple test items, the pack also works as a gentle introduction to multiple-choice reading assessments.
