Description
A word family is a group of words that share the same ending chunk, called a rime. When children know one rime, they can read many new words just by changing the first sound. This OCK Word Family Worksheet helps young readers practice the short o -ock family with words like sock, clock, flock, and block, including words that begin with blends.
This first grade word families worksheet starts with a colorful word bank of eight -ock words. Students read each of the six sentences, think about which word makes sense, and write it in the box. Two words in the bank are not used, so children must read every sentence carefully instead of guessing. A bright picture of a tower of toy blocks ties the page to one of the answers. The second page is a complete answer key, so checking work is quick for teachers and parents. There are three big reasons this page helps kids grow as readers. First, reading many words with the same rime builds automatic decoding, so children spend less energy sounding out and more energy understanding. Second, the blends and tricky beginnings in the bank, such as bl, cl, fl, and the silent k in knock, give extra practice with first sounds that often trip up early readers. Third, choosing the right word for each sentence connects phonics to meaning, which is the goal of every phonics lesson.
Here are a few ideas to stretch the learning. Before the page, write -ock on the board and let students add first sounds to build real words and silly words. After the page, ask children to use the two leftover words in sentences of their own. Stack real blocks as students read each -ock word aloud, or have them hunt for -ock words in a favorite storybook and add them to a class word family chart.
