About this resource

Description

Prime factorization breaks a number down into the prime numbers that multiply together to make it, and this prime factorization worksheet gives fifth graders a clear, hands-on way to practice that skill. By building factor trees, students see exactly how a larger number such as 12, 18, or 50 splits apart step by step until only prime numbers are left. It is a foundational math skill that supports later work with fractions, greatest common factors, and least common multiples.

This printable factor tree worksheet presents five numbers, each shown at the top of its own factor tree with blank circles waiting to be filled in. Students split each number into two factors, keep breaking down any composite factor, and then write the finished prime factorization on the line below. A completed answer key makes it easy to check work or use the page for quick review, homework, or a math-center activity.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 5 factor tree problems with prime factorization practice

This prime factorization worksheet helps students in three important ways. First, the factor tree structure turns an abstract idea into a visual, step-by-step process that is easy to follow. Second, writing each answer in expanded form, like 2 × 2 × 3, reinforces how multiplication and prime numbers connect. Third, the mix of numbers builds confidence, moving students from simple trees toward ones with several branches so the challenge grows gradually.

Teachers and parents can extend the learning in fun ways. Challenge students to pick their own numbers to factor, or race to see who can build a factor tree the fastest. Connect the skill to real life by factoring house numbers, ages, or scores from a favorite game. Pair the worksheet with the Prime Numbers Song for a musical review, and encourage students to explain their trees out loud to deepen understanding.
