Description
Every classroom runs on a small set of words a child hears a hundred times a day — science, library, cafeteria, recess, music, spelling, homework, and principal. Children recognize them long before they can use them precisely, and that gap shows up the moment a test asks which subject, which room, or which part of the day a sentence is describing. The School Words Worksheet closes that gap by asking third graders to place each school word into a sentence where only one word can possibly fit, so the meaning is built from context instead of memorized from a list.
This 3rd grade back to school worksheet is a single print-ready page with two short parts and a complete answer key. In Part A children read four sentences and write the school word from the box that completes each one — and no sentence names its own answer, so the choice has to come from the clues inside it. In Part B four brief clues describe a school word each, and children write the word on the line beside the clue. Each of the eight words in the box is used exactly once, so a child who works carefully can check the whole page by elimination. Use it during the first weeks of school, as a vocabulary warm-up, as morning work, or as a quick check before a unit assessment.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids Learn
- Context is how vocabulary actually sticks. Writing cafeteria into a sentence about trays and long tables teaches far more than reading the word on a card, because the child has to decide what the sentence is describing.
- Each word is used exactly once. That single rule turns the page into a small puzzle: every answer a child is sure of makes the remaining ones easier, and careful readers are rewarded.
- School vocabulary lowers the cost of everything else. A child who owns these words follows directions, reads a schedule, and understands a classroom notice without stopping to guess.
Teachers and parents can stretch this school words worksheet in a few easy ways. Before children write anything, read the word box aloud together and ask where in the building each word lives. After the page is finished, have partners take turns making up a brand-new clue for a word from the box while the other guesses it. Ask children to add two more school words of their own — gym, bus, nurse — and write a sentence for each. At home, walk through the school day in order and name the word that belongs to each part of it, from the first bell to the last.
