About this resource

Description

This illustrating multiple meaning worksheet helps 2nd grade students discover that some words are spelled the same but mean very different things. A bat can be an animal that flies at night or a stick for hitting a baseball, and a duck can be a bird or a way to bend down low. Children learn to use the rest of the sentence as a clue to the meaning.

The page has six cards built around three multiple-meaning words: bat, bark and duck. Each word appears in two sentences, one for each meaning. Students read the sentence, look at the green word, circle the meaning that fits, and then draw a picture of that meaning in the box. Drawing both meanings side by side makes the difference easy to see and remember. Use this illustrating multiple meaning worksheet in a word-work center, as a vocabulary warm-up, or as a creative homework page.

What’s Included

  • Six sentence cards using the words bat, bark and duck
  • A circle-the-meaning choice on every card
  • A drawing box on every card for a picture of the meaning
  • An answer key with the correct meanings and sample drawing ideas

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

First, it teaches students to use context clues, which is the key skill for figuring out a word with more than one meaning. Second, drawing each meaning turns an abstract idea into a picture that children can remember. Third, seeing the same word in two cards side by side helps kids compare the meanings and notice exactly what changed in the sentence. This 2nd grade multiple meaning words worksheet builds vocabulary, reading comprehension and confidence.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

After students finish, ask them to share their drawings with a partner and explain which clue words helped them decide. Challenge early finishers to think of another multiple-meaning word, such as ring, fly or bat, and draw both meanings on the back. At home, parents can play a quick game by saying a sentence aloud and asking which meaning of the word they mean.
