About this resource

Description

A trip to the grocery store is something almost every child knows, which makes it a perfect setting for early reading practice. This Shopping Cart Reading Comprehension Worksheet uses that familiar outing to build real reading comprehension skills. First graders read a short, friendly story about a boy who helps his mom shop, then answer questions that send them back to the text to find each detail.

About This Worksheet

In the story, Isaac and his mom pick out a shopping cart with a squeaky wheel. Isaac pushes the cart, chooses a bunch of yellow bananas while his mom gets milk, sets the eggs on top so they will not crack, and pushes the full cart out to the car. Students read the page, look at the picture, and fill in the bubble next to the best answer for five multiple-choice questions. Every question points to one sentence in the story, so children practice finding key details instead of guessing. It works well as a 1st grade grocery store reading worksheet for literacy centers, morning work, homework, or a community helpers and healthy food unit.

What’s Included

  • An original 1st grade story about helping at the grocery store
  • A comic-style picture of a boy putting bananas into a shopping cart
  • Five multiple-choice comprehension questions with three answer choices each
  • A complete answer key

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

First, short sentences and everyday words let new readers work on their own and feel successful. Second, each question asks students to look back at the story for one specific detail, which is the most important habit of strong readers. Third, the story follows a clear order of events, first, next and at last, so children notice how time-order words help a story make sense.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Read the story aloud once, then have partners take turns reading it to each other. After the questions, ask students to underline the sentence that proves each answer. Extend the Shopping Cart Reading Comprehension Worksheet by having children draw their own shopping cart and label three foods they would buy, or by acting out the story with a toy cart and play food. Talk about the ways children can be good helpers at home and at the store.
