How to teach Shapes
Using this Sort It Organizing Shapes Activity, students sort pictures of 2D shapes into the category that have the same shape attributes.
Your students interact with shapes almost everyday. They need to know different shapes to be able to describe objects they are looking for. This activity will help your students know the names of common 2D shapes.
Sort the shapes (and some of your own shapes) into as many categories as possible! What do the shapes have in common? How are they different? Record your different categories of sorting on the record sheet! Then, create a rule about quadrilaterals. What do ALL quadrilaterals have?

You may introduce this activity by reviewing 2-D shape names using the Have Fun Teaching Shape Song. Next, display different real world examples of each of the 2-D shapes. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about 2-D shapes. After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to promote 2-D shape identification skills. Finally, students look for examples of 2D shapes in the classroom or at home.
