Reading comprehension is the point where decoding turns into understanding, and by fourth grade students are expected to do far more than recall what happened. This Spring Cleaning Reading Comprehension Worksheet asks them to find a main idea, work out a word from context, track the order of events, and infer why a character changes his mind. The story is an original narrative written at a fourth grade reading level, long enough to build real reading stamina without overwhelming a young reader.
The worksheet opens with a two-page story about a brother and sister who spend a Saturday clearing out the family garage and find a crate of hand-painted clay pots that belonged to their grandmother. Students read the whole story first, then move to the question page and answer using details from the text.
