Reading comprehension at fifth grade is no longer about finding a fact on the page. It is about following a character across a whole story and working out what changed and why. The Taking Pictures Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives students a two-page narrative and then asks them to explain the character’s thinking, not just repeat the events. That is the jump most fifth graders are being asked to make, and it takes practice on real stories of real length.
Students read about Paige, who gets a camera for her birthday and believes that taking hundreds of pictures will eventually produce a good one. On a class nature walk at a pond, every shot she takes comes out blurry, empty, or badly framed. A classmate named Margaret shows her something different: she sits still, decides what her picture will be, and waits for the heron. On the third page students answer four multiple-choice questions and one written response that asks them to compare how the two girls work. The passage is written on a fifth grade reading level, and the questions are drawn from across both story pages rather than from the opening paragraphs.
