Sight words are the high-frequency words a beginning reader meets on nearly every page — small words like as, from, let, live, once, round, and were that do not always follow the usual phonics rules. Children learn them best by meeting them again and again inside a real story, which is exactly what this first sight words reading comprehension worksheet is built to do. Instead of drilling a word list, your child reads a short farm story in which every target word is printed in dark type, so the eye lands on it naturally and the word begins to feel familiar.
This first grade sight words worksheet opens with an original story called The Round Farm, illustrated with a full-color watercolor scene of the farm. Read the story aloud together first, then let your child read it independently and point to each dark sight word along the way. On the second page, five multiple-choice questions ask them to fill in the bubble beside the best answer, including one item that puts a sight word back into a sentence. First, the sight words appear in context rather than in isolation, so children build instant word recognition and meaning at the same time. Second, the story is written and measured to a first-grade reading level, so the sentences are short enough to decode without help and that early success builds real confidence. Third, the questions send children back into the text for evidence — who lives on the farm, what changed, and why the characters were happy — which is the same kind of thinking their reading assessments will ask for later.
Keep the practice going away from the page. Write the seven sight words on index cards and play a fast round of memory or go fish. Ask your child to hunt for the same words in a favorite picture book and tally how many they find. Have them draw their own round farm and write one sentence about it using two of the words. Rereading the story on two or three different days builds fluency, too, because speed and expression grow most on the second and third readings.
