The This Is Me Worksheet is a back to school page that lets a kindergartner introduce herself in her own words and her own picture. At the very start of the year a child has a great deal to say about who she is and almost no writing stamina to say it with. This page is built for exactly that gap. Three short sentence starters ask for a name, a strength, and a favorite part of school, and a large open box invites the self-portrait that carries everything the words cannot. Talking and drawing about yourself is also real language work: it practices naming, choosing a describing word, and holding one idea long enough to write it down.
This kindergarten back to school worksheet keeps the writing load small on purpose. Every line begins with words the child can already read, so the only new work is the ending. Read the three starters aloud together first, let children say their answers before they write them, and accept a single word, an invented spelling, or even a drawn answer on the line. Then give plenty of time for the picture, which is where most kindergartners will put their real effort. Use it on the first morning of school, at a meet-your-classmates center, as a page for a beginning-of-year memory book, or as a piece to compare with the same sheet done again in May.

Three things make the This Is Me Worksheet work in a kindergarten classroom. First, the picture and the words carry equal weight, so a child who cannot yet write a sentence still finishes a complete page and feels like a writer. Second, the starters are personal, and children write far more willingly about themselves than about an assigned topic. Third, a finished sheet tells the teacher a great deal in one glance: letter formation, how much of a name a child can spell, what she is proud of, and what she is looking forward to at school.
Read the finished sheets aloud during morning meeting and let the class guess who wrote each one before the picture is shown. Pin them side by side on a hallway board so families can find their own child on the first week. Turn the drawings into a class book by punching and binding them, or photograph each one and play a matching game with the photos. At home, a parent can fill in a sheet too, and comparing the two answers makes for a lovely dinner conversation.
