About this resource

Description

Adding numbers in the hundreds is where place value finally does real work, and this three digit addition worksheet gives third graders the practice they need to make it automatic. Students line up the ones, tens, and hundreds, add one column at a time, and regroup whenever a column passes nine. Every problem on the page requires at least one regroup, so children cannot coast through on the easy items and then stall on the hard ones. Working carefully through a three digit addition worksheet like this one builds the accuracy that every later skill, from multi digit subtraction to multiplication, quietly depends on.

The page is built in two parts. Part A holds six column problems, each one set in its own card with a clear equation bar and plenty of white space beneath it for the answer. Part B moves the same skill into three word problems about a school library, a farm stand, and a class collecting cans, including one problem with three addends so students have to stack and add more than two numbers. Print it for morning work, a math center, homework, a quick check before a unit test, or small group reteaching. A complete answer key is included on the last page, so checking the whole sheet takes a moment.

What’s Included

  • One printable page with six three digit column addition problems, every one requiring regrouping
  • Three applied word problems, including a three addend problem
  • Roomy answer space under every equation bar and a writing line for each word problem
  • A full answer key as the final page
  • Name and date fields at the top of the student page

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • Mixed regrouping keeps students thinking. The carry falls in the ones on some problems, the tens on others, and both columns on the rest, so children have to check each column instead of repeating a pattern.
  • The card layout keeps columns straight. Each problem sits in its own bordered card with the digits already aligned, which removes the copying errors that hide what a student actually knows.
  • Word problems connect the algorithm to real quantities. Students decide what to add before they add it, which is exactly what standardized assessments ask a third grader to do.

Ideas For Teachers And Parents

Ask students to estimate each sum before they compute, then compare the estimate with the answer as a built in accuracy check. Have children circle the column where they regrouped and write the small carried digit above it, so the regrouping is visible and can be discussed. Partners can swap papers and check each other’s work with the key. At home, this 3rd grade addition worksheet works well as a ten minute warm up before homework, and the word problems can be read aloud together so the reading never gets in the way of the math.
