Description
Sight words are the words a young reader meets most often, and reading them instantly is what frees a child to think about meaning instead of decoding. This sight words reading comprehension worksheet puts eight first sight words — fly, open, by, stop, may, then, after and when — inside a short story about the things that can lift off the ground, so a first grader practices word recognition and comprehension at the same time. Meeting a familiar word inside a real sentence is what moves it from a word a child can sound out to a word a child simply knows.
This first grade reading comprehension worksheet opens with a soft watercolor scene of a kite flying high in an open sky, followed by a 104-word story about kites, birds, butterflies, bees and airplanes. Five multiple-choice questions follow on the next page, and every one of them is answered directly from the text. Read the story aloud together first, then let your student read it on their own and fill in one bubble for each question. The included answer key turns checking the work into a two-minute job.

Three things make this sight words reading comprehension worksheet work in a first grade classroom. First, every question sends the reader back into the passage for evidence, which is exactly the habit that reading assessments measure. Second, the answer choices are short and evenly matched, so a child has to read all three rather than pick the longest one. Third, the sight words repeat naturally across the story instead of sitting alone on a flashcard, so each word is practiced in the place it will actually be read.
Away from the page, keep the same words in play. Write the eight sight words on index cards and hide them around the room for a quick word hunt. Ask your child to use two of them in a sentence about something they have seen fly outside. Build a simple paper kite together and talk about what makes it rise, float and stop. Reread the story on a different day and time it, because a familiar text read a second time is the easiest fluency practice there is.
