Description
Primer is the second Dolch list, and it is the one that turns a kindergartner who knows a handful of words into a child who can read a whole story on their own. This primer sight words reading comprehension worksheet puts nine of those words to work in a single short tale about a hungry black bear. The words be, black, but, ate, did, saw, so, this and what are not drilled in a column here; they carry the sentences, which is where a sight word actually has to be recognised.
The story runs to sixty-two words at a kindergarten reading level, set in large friendly type beside a soft watercolour scene of the bear grazing on berries in a sunny clearing. Page one is the story on its own, so a young reader can settle into it without a question in view. Page two carries five multiple-choice items with three choices each, and every answer is right there in the text a child has just read. Use this kindergarten reading comprehension worksheet for guided reading, as an independent centre once primer words are introduced, or as a quick way to see whether a child is reading the sentence or guessing from the picture.

Three things make this primer sight words reading comprehension worksheet useful in a kindergarten classroom. First, the sight words appear inside real sentences, so a child practises recognising them at speed rather than reciting them from a list. Second, the questions ask about details a reader has to go back and find, which builds the habit of returning to the text instead of answering from memory. Third, the fill-in-the-bubble format is the one a young child will meet on early assessments, and meeting it here, on a story they can already read, takes the strangeness out of it.
Teachers and parents can keep the same words moving all week. Read the story aloud together on Monday and let the child take over every word they already know. Write the nine words on cards and have the child hunt for each one in the story. Ask the child to draw what the bear ate next and label it. Sight word songs work beautifully alongside a story like this, since a word a child can sing is a word they will spot on the page. Keep the finished sheet in a reading folder and read it again in a month to hear how much faster it goes.
