From our teachers' playbook

Numbers to 120 and beyond

What do 1st graders learn in math?

First grade math builds the base for everything that follows. Kids add and subtract within 20 using strategies like counting on and making ten, and by the end of the year they know facts within 10 by heart. They count, read and write numbers to 120 and understand that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones: 47 = 4 tens and 7 ones. They compare numbers with greater than, less than and equal to, measure length with objects, tell time to the hour and half hour, and work with shapes, halves and fourths. It is a big year of number sense!

Our favorite moves for 1st grade math

First graders learn math by doing. These moves keep hands busy and minds working.

Tens and ones with straws

Bundle straws into groups of ten with rubber bands. Kids build numbers like 34 with three bundles and four loose straws. It makes two-digit numbers real and sets up place value for 2nd grade.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Quick look, quick count

Flash a dot card for just two seconds and ask how many. Kids learn to see small amounts without counting one by one. It is a great warm-up that builds the number sense behind fast addition.

Why it works: pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than rereading it, one of the strongest findings in learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Count every day

Start math with a counting song and count higher as the year goes on. Counting to 120 and skip counting by 5s and 10s feels easy when it is part of a daily routine.

Why it works: a catchy, repeating tune gives the brain a hook to hang words on, so sung text is remembered better (Wallace, 1994).

1st grade math questions from parents

What math should a 1st grader know?

By the end of 1st grade, kids should add and subtract within 20, count to 120, understand tens and ones, compare two-digit numbers, tell time to the half hour and measure length.

How can I help my 1st grader with math at home?

Count objects, play board games with dice, talk about time on a clock, and practice a few addition facts each day. Short, playful practice works best.

What math facts should a 1st grader memorize?

Most 1st graders work toward knowing addition and subtraction facts within 10 quickly, while using strategies for facts within 20.

Is 1st grade math hard?

It is a big step, especially place value and subtraction. Hands-on practice with objects helps kids understand instead of just memorize.

Yes. First graders usually learn to tell time to the hour and half hour on both analog and digital clocks.
