From our teachers' playbook

Push it, sort it, watch it grow

What do kindergarteners learn in science?

Kindergarten science is about noticing and asking. Kids watch the weather and seasons change, learn what plants and animals need to live, and test pushes and pulls by rolling balls and pulling wagons. They sort objects by color, size and material, name body parts, and learn ways to care for Earth like recycling. Most of all, they practice being scientists: observe, predict, test and tell. The click moment is a child predicting "the big ball will roll farther" and racing to find out.

Our favorite ways to make science stick in kindergarten

Kindergarten scientists learn by doing. These moves get their hands busy and their questions flowing.

Push or pull test

Set out a few toys: a wagon, a door, a ball, a drawer. Kids try moving each and decide: push or pull? Then they sort pictures the same way. Testing with their own hands makes the idea stick.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

Weather word wall

Each morning, a weather helper looks outside and picks the matching weather word and picture. By the end of the month the class has a weather graph and a whole new set of vocabulary.

Why it works: children learn more from words and pictures together than from words alone (Mayer, 2009).

Sing the body

Play the Parts of the Body Song and kids touch each part as it's named. Then speed it up! Movement plus music is how body part names stick for little learners.

Why it works: a catchy, repeating tune gives the brain a hook to hang words on, so sung text is remembered better (Wallace, 1994).

Questions teachers and parents ask

What science do kindergarteners learn?

Weather and seasons, pushes and pulls, what plants and animals need, the five senses and body parts, sorting objects and caring for Earth. The focus is on observing and asking questions.

How do you teach science to kindergarteners?

Keep it hands-on. Let kids touch, test and talk about what they notice. Ask "What do you think will happen?" before every experiment.

What is push and pull in kindergarten?

A push moves something away from you, and a pull moves it toward you. Kids learn that pushes and pulls make things start, stop and change direction.

How can I do science with my kindergartener at home?

Plant a seed, roll toy cars down ramps, watch the weather and sort laundry by color. Ask lots of questions and let your child predict.
