From our teachers' playbook

A whole grade's review, ready to go

What are relief packs and when do they help?

Relief packs are grade-level bundles of printable review, from kindergarten through 5th grade. We first made them for families learning at home when schools closed, and teachers still reach for them any time kids are learning away from the regular routine: absences, snow days, sub days, summer break or a quick back-to-school refresher. Each pack mixes reading, writing and math practice at that grade level, so a child can keep skills fresh without a grown-up planning every page. The magic is having a full set of review ready to print the moment you need it.

Our favorite ways to use relief packs

A packet only helps if kids actually use it. These are the moves that make it work.

A few pages a day

Instead of sending the whole pack home at once, split it into daily bundles of two or three pages with a checkbox for each day. Kids feel success every day, and short daily review keeps skills from slipping much better than one marathon.

Why it works: the brain holds on to what it meets again and again over time; spaced practice was rated among the very best methods (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Mix reading and math

Pair one reading page with one math page each day. Switching subjects keeps kids fresh and gives a nice review of everything at once. Families love a simple routine: "one reading, one math, then play."

Why it works: shuffled practice teaches kids to choose the right strategy, not just repeat one, and it improved test scores in research (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

Sub day in a folder

Keep a relief pack copied and ready in your sub folder. When you're out unexpectedly, the substitute has a full day of grade-level work with no planning needed, and kids aren't stuck with busywork.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What is in a relief pack?

Each relief pack is a printable bundle of grade-level review covering reading, writing and math. There are packs for kindergarten through 5th grade.

When should I use a relief pack?

Any time kids are learning outside the normal classroom routine: absences, sub days, snow days, summer break or a back-to-school review.

Which relief pack should I choose?

Pick the grade your child just finished for summer review, or the current grade for absences and sub days. Pack 2 at each grade gives extra practice once Pack 1 is done.

How long does a relief pack take?

It depends on the child, but two or three pages a day works well and spreads one pack over a couple of weeks.
