About this resource
Description
Big G, little g and the G in goat all come together in the Letter G Game, a cozy gem-cracking adventure for preschool kids. Gus the Gopher found sparkly yarn gems in a glowing crystal cave, and every gem carries a letter or a picture. When a child taps a gem with the letter G, it cracks open, a smiling golden star pops out, and it flies into the star row beside Gus. Playing the letter g game again and again helps little learners recognize the big G and the little g, tell G apart from look-alike letters like C, O and q, and hear that goat, gift, guitar, gate and gorilla all start with G.
In this letter g phonics game, Roxy cheers kids on through three rounds. First they find the big G among letters like C, O and S, with the tip that big G looks like a big C, with a little line that goes in. Then they find the little g among look-alikes like q, p and a, with the tip that little g is a little circle with a tail that curls under. Last, they crack open the pictures that start with G and skip the cat, the cup and the jar. The letters and pictures a child mixed up come back for one more try. Roxy reads every direction out loud, names each answer (“Goat! Goat starts with G.”) and gives a kind hint after a wrong tap. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.

Here are three reasons this letter g game helps kids learn. First, the wrong choices are the real mix-ups young children make, like q for g and C for G, so kids practice exactly what trips them up. Second, Roxy names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big G, little g and starts with G, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the shining stars, the dancing gopher, the wiggling gems, the golden gem surprise, streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.
Teachers and parents can keep the G fun going after the game. Go on a G hunt and find a glove, a game and a green crayon. Draw a big C in the air together, then add the little line that goes in to make a G. Gallop around the room and say a G word with every step. Wrap a little gift box and take turns naming things that start with G.
