From our teachers' playbook

Prove it with the text

What do 6th graders learn in reading?

Sixth grade readers learn to back up what they say with evidence. Kids cite specific lines from the text to support their answers, find the theme or central idea, and write objective summaries. They analyze how a plot unfolds, how characters change, and how an author develops point of view. In nonfiction, they trace an author's argument and check whether the reasons hold up. Vocabulary grows with context clues, Greek and Latin roots and figurative language. The big shift: I think → I think, because the text says…

Our favorite ways to grow 6th grade readers

Sixth graders are ready to think like critics. These moves help them get there.

Sing the context clues

Play the Context Clues Song at the start of a vocabulary unit. Then give kids a passage with tricky words and have them name which kind of clue helped: a definition, an example or an opposite. The song gives them the vocabulary to explain their thinking.

Why it works: a catchy, repeating tune gives the brain a hook to hang words on, so sung text is remembered better (Wallace, 1994).

Cite it like a pro

Read a biography passage and answer a question out loud using a sentence frame: "I know Harriet Tubman was brave because the text says…" Show how to put the quote in quotation marks. Then kids answer the next question the same way.

Why it works: showing first, practicing together, then letting kids try alone is the "gradual release" model teachers have relied on for decades (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

A passage a week, all year

Use a nonfiction reading workbook for one short passage each week. Regular practice keeps comprehension skills sharp between units and builds the stamina kids need for longer texts.

Why it works: the brain holds on to what it meets again and again over time; spaced practice was rated among the very best methods (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

6th grade reading questions we hear a lot

What reading skills are taught in 6th grade?

Sixth graders cite text evidence, determine theme and central idea, summarize, analyze plot and character, explain point of view and evaluate an author's argument. They also build vocabulary with context clues and word roots.

What does citing text evidence mean?

It means using exact words or details from the text to support your answer. Instead of just saying a character is kind, a student points to a line that shows the character being kind.

How can I help my 6th grader with reading comprehension?

Ask them to explain what they're reading and point to the part that proves it. Encourage both fiction and nonfiction, and talk about news articles together.

How much should a 6th grader read each day?

Many teachers suggest 20 to 30 minutes of independent reading each day. Letting kids choose books they enjoy helps them stick with it.
