From our teachers' playbook

How much space? Let's cover it!

What do kids learn about area?

Area is how much flat space a shape covers, measured in square units. Kids start by counting the squares inside a shape on grid paper. Soon they notice a faster way: rows times columns. A rectangle 4 squares long and 3 squares wide covers 4 × 3 = 12 square units. Later they split odd-shaped figures into rectangles, then move on to triangles and other formulas. The click moment is seeing that the multiplication is just a shortcut for counting all those squares.

Our favorite ways to make area stick

Area makes sense when kids can see the squares. These moves build from counting to the formula.

Tile it first

Hand out square tiles and have kids cover a rectangle with no gaps or overlaps. Count the tiles, then count the rows. Kids discover the rows-times-columns shortcut on their own, which beats being told.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Show the shortcut

Draw a 6 by 4 rectangle on grid paper and think aloud: "I could count all 24 squares, or I could see 4 rows of 6." Write 6 × 4 = 24 right next to the grid. Connecting the picture to the equation is the whole lesson.

Why it works: showing first, practicing together, then letting kids try alone is the "gradual release" model teachers have relied on for decades (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Area or perimeter?

Put area and perimeter problems on one page and make kids decide before they solve. "Are we covering it or going around it?" Mixing them stops the classic mix-up of adding when you should multiply.

Why it works: mixing different kinds of problems in one practice set helped students do far better on a later test (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

Questions parents and teachers ask us

How do you explain area to kids?

Area is how many squares it takes to cover a flat shape with no gaps or overlaps. Start with grid paper or square tiles so kids can count, then show the multiplication shortcut.

What grade do kids learn area?

Area is usually introduced in 3rd grade with counting squares and multiplying length by width. In 4th and 5th grade kids use the formula for rectangles and move on to more complex shapes.

What is the difference between area and perimeter?

Area is the space inside a shape, measured in square units. Perimeter is the distance around the outside, measured in regular units. Think of area as the carpet and perimeter as the fence.

How do you find the area of an irregular shape?

Break it into rectangles, find the area of each one, and add them together. Drawing lines to split the shape is the key step.
