From our teachers' playbook

Eggs, bunnies and springtime learning!

What can kids learn about Easter?

Easter is a spring holiday celebrated by Christians around the world to remember the resurrection of Jesus. Many families also enjoy spring traditions like egg hunts, baskets and the Easter Bunny. Easter themes are a fun way to practice skills kids are already learning: counting eggs, reading word families like back, pack, sack, putting words in ABC order and reading short passages about the holiday. The click moment is when an egg hunt turns into a math lesson and nobody notices.

Our favorite ways to learn with Easter themes

These moves keep skills sharp in spring while the holiday adds the fun.

A word family a day

Do one word family each day during Easter week, like -ack, -old and -un. Kids read the words, then write a silly sentence with them. A family a day gives steady phonics practice without feeling like a drill.

Why it works: short practice spread over several days beats one long session, according to a large review of learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Read and answer

Read a short passage about Easter together, then have kids answer questions and point to where they found each answer. It keeps comprehension practice going right up to the break.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Picture word cards

Use Easter picture cards for quick vocabulary and spelling practice. Show the picture, have kids say the word, then spell it. Younger kids can sort the cards by beginning sound.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).
