About this resource

Description

Skip counting by tens is one of the biggest number-sense wins in early elementary math. When a student can start at any number and jump forward ten at a time, place value stops being a rule to memorize and becomes a pattern they can see: the ones digit holds still while the tens digit climbs. This skip count by tens worksheet gives 2nd graders that pattern in a form they can hold onto, and every chain starts off the decade so the counting takes real thinking instead of a recited list. Counting across 100 — from 79 to 89 to 99 to 109 — is where the pattern proves itself, and this sheet takes students right through it.

The worksheet is built in two parts. In Part A, students find the starting number in the shaded box at the left of each row and fill the next five boxes, counting on by tens. In Part B the task flips: the first and last numbers of the row are already printed and two numbers in the middle are missing, so students count forward and then check themselves against a number they can already see. That self-checking step is what turns this counting by tens worksheet into a short reasoning task rather than a fill-in-the-blank exercise. A complete answer key is included on the second page.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 4 skip-counting chains in Part A (20 numbers to write)
  • 3 missing-number chains in Part B (6 numbers to write)

Three things make this skip count by tens worksheet effective. First, every chain begins off the decade, so students cannot fall back on chanting 10, 20, 30 — they have to apply the pattern to a number like 37 or 61. Second, the boxed layout keeps the numbers lined up in one straight row, which makes the repeating ones digit visible at a glance and lets students notice the rule for themselves instead of being told it. Third, the sheet crosses 100 twice, so students meet the trickiest stretch of the pattern while the support of the chain is still there to guide them.

Teachers and parents can stretch this skill well past the page. Count by tens out loud while climbing stairs or bouncing a ball, starting from a number the child picks. Pull out a hundred chart and color one column at a time so the pattern shows up down the page. Dimes are a natural fit — line up eight of them and count 10, 20, 30 and on. Play a quick round of “ten more, ten less,” calling out a number and asking for both answers. And sing along with the Have Fun Teaching Counting By Tens Song while you work.
