How to teach Comparing Products
In this 5.NF.5 Fifth Grade Common Core Lesson, students compare the size of a product to the size of one factor to the other factor.
This lesson teaches students how to compare the sizes of two products with the same factor. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
Play Product Grand Prix using the same color deck.First, shuffle and deal all the cards to each play. Next, each player flips over a card from their pile. Then, compare each product by looking at the size of each factor. The player with the largest product moves forward one space on the racetrack. The first player to finish wins. After playing, complete the recording sheet after game play. Finally, continue your practice with the provided worksheets independently or with a partner.

Use this Matching Multiplication Products Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
First, introduce this lesson by displaying two multiplication sentences. Make sure that they have the same factors (____ x 34 and ____ x 34). Ask students how they are similar. Next, distribute materials to students. As students work, circulate around the classroom and listen to discussions students have about multiplying.
