Counting a handful of change is one of the first real-world math jobs a first grader is given, and this adding penny, nickel, dime coins worksheet gives them six chances to practice it. Children look at a small group of coins, name each one by its size and its markings, and add the values together to find a total in cents. Because the page uses only the penny, the nickel and the dime, students can count on by ones, skip count by fives and skip count by tens without ever having to hold four coin values in their heads at once.
Each coin group sits inside its own numbered box with a Total line underneath it, so there is never any question about which coins belong together. Every coin is drawn at its true United States mint size, which means the dime really is smaller than the penny and the nickel really is the widest of the three.
