About this resource
Description
Every fish is built for life in the water, and each part of its body does a job. This Basic Fish Parts Worksheet introduces first graders to six parts they can see on almost any fish: the eye, the mouth, the gills, the fin, the scales, and the tail. Naming those parts is how young scientists begin to describe living things, compare one animal with another, and explain how an animal survives in the place where it lives.
This fish body parts worksheet gives students one large, clearly drawn fish with six numbered pointers on it. Students read the six words in the word box, decide which part each number touches, and write the correct name on the matching line below the picture. Every line is the same length and the words sit in alphabetical order, so children have to read the picture instead of guessing from the layout. Use it as a warm-up before an animal unit, as independent practice at a science center, or as a quick check after a lesson on animal body parts.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 numbered picture callouts and a 6-word word box
This Basic Fish Parts Worksheet helps children learn the skill in three ways. First, the labeled picture ties a science word to something a child can actually see, so the vocabulary sticks. Second, writing each word by hand practices spelling and handwriting at the same time as the science. Third, the word box takes away the spelling guesswork while leaving the thinking work in place, so beginning readers can still finish the whole page with confidence.
Teachers and parents can stretch this lesson in plenty of easy ways. Visit a pet store or an aquarium and ask children to find the gills and the fin on a real fish. Have students draw a fish of their own and label the parts from memory. Compare a fish with a bird or a dog, and talk about which parts each animal has and why. Or play a quick round of point to the part while you read a picture book about ocean animals together.
