Description
Hearing the very first sound in a spoken word is where reading begins, and this beginning sounds m n p worksheet gives first graders focused practice with three of the most common consonants: m, n and p. Children look at a picture, say the word out loud, listen for the sound at the front, and then write the letter that spells it. Because the rest of the word is already printed on the page, the child has to isolate one sound and match it to one letter, which is exactly the skill that unlocks decoding and spelling later on.
This worksheet asks for a little more than pointing or circling. After writing m, n or p into the blank, the child copies the whole word onto the writing line below the picture, so every item moves from listening to letter formation to encoding a complete word.
