Description
Consonant blends are two letters that keep their own sounds and slide together at the start of a word, like the /s/ and /k/ you hear in scarf and skate. First graders who can hear and spell those two letters as one smooth unit read new words far more easily, because most one-syllable words they meet begin with a blend. This Blends SC, SK Worksheet gives them focused practice with the two trickiest s-blends, the ones that sound almost identical but are spelled differently.
This printable beginning blends worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students look at six watercolor pictures, say each picture name out loud, and write the beginning blend on the line below it. In Part B, they read all six words from the word box and write each one in the correct column, sorting the sc words away from the sk words. Working from pictures first and print second means students hear the blend before they have to spell it, which is the order that makes the pattern stick.

There are three reasons this Blends SC, SK Worksheet helps first graders learn the skill. First, every picture is a real object a six-year-old can name without help, so the task tests the blend and nothing else. Second, the sc and sk words are mixed in a scrambled order, so students have to listen and read rather than copy a pattern down the page. Third, the two-part design moves from sound to print in one sitting, so students finish the page able to both hear the blend and spell it.
Teachers and parents can stretch this practice in a few easy ways. Go on a blend hunt through a favorite picture book and tally every sc and sk word you find. Write the six words on index cards, spread them on the floor, and let students sort them into two piles as fast as they can. Say a word and have students hold up two fingers for the two letters in the blend before they write it. Finish by asking students to draw one sc picture and one sk picture of their own and label each with the right blend.
