Description
The Bug Collection Reading Comprehension Worksheet turns a jar, a notebook and a summer afternoon into a lesson about how scientists sort the living world. Students read an original nonfiction passage about starting a bug collection, then answer questions that send them back into the text for evidence. The passage explains what an order is, why all six of an insect’s legs attach to its middle section, how beetles, butterflies and moths, ants and bees, and grasshoppers and crickets each give themselves away, and why a modern collector carries a notebook instead of a pin box.
This 5th grade reading comprehension worksheet runs the passage across two full pages, so students build real reading stamina before the questions begin. The third page holds four multiple-choice questions covering supporting detail, vocabulary in context, cause and effect, and main idea, drawn from across both pages of the passage rather than from the opening paragraph alone. It closes with a written response that asks students to explain a claim from the text and back it with two details of their own choosing. The fourth page is a complete answer key, with a sample response for the written item.

There are three reasons this bug collection reading comprehension worksheet helps children read nonfiction better. First, the passage is built on a real classification idea, so students practise holding a category in mind while they read about its members, which is what informational text asks of them all through school. Second, the vocabulary students need is defined inside the sentence that introduces it, so an unfamiliar word becomes a chance to practise using context instead of a reason to stop. Third, every question can be answered from the text, so a student who goes back and rereads is rewarded for it.
Teachers and parents can carry this page outside. Ask students to keep a field notebook for a week, recording the date, the place, the weather and what each insect was doing, then sort their entries into the four groups the passage names. Have them draw an insect and a spider side by side and label the differences in leg count and body sections. A hand lens and a clear jar are enough for a whole afternoon of observation, and everything in the jar goes free at the end of it.
