How to teach Author’s Purpose
Using this Evidence Olympics Authors Purpose Activity, students try to earn a gold medal during Evidence Olympics by reading a passage and finding evidence to support an author’s point.
Understanding the reason why an author wrote a text supports your students’ comprehension as they read. This worksheet gives them the opportunity to explain the reason why an author writes.
To use this Evidence Olympics Authors Purpose Activity, students will read a passage and find evidence to support an author’s point. A student will then roll the die to see whether they’ll be participating in the Swimming, Archery, or Cycling Olympic Event. Three players independently read the passage. Next, each player will choose an “Author’s Point Question Card” to answer. The player will read the question and find evidence in the passage to support the answer. Students will either highlight the evidence they find or fill in the recording sheet. Students will check their answers by looking at the highlighted answer key passages. The answer key will show the supporting evidence that the author uses to support his point.
A player who finds 3 or more pieces of supporting evidence will receive a gold medal. If 2 pieces of evidence are found, a player earns a silver medal. If one piece of evidence is found, a player earns a bronze medal.
For a durable, longer-lasting activity, print this activity on cardstock. Cut out the question cards and the medal cards and laminate.
