How to teach Author’s Purpose
Using Let’s Give Some Support Activity, students describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
Understanding the reason why an author wrote a text supports your students’ comprehension as they read. This activity gives them the opportunity to learn more about why an author writes.
Students will use the graphic organizer as they read “the Giant Giraffe” to support specific points the author makes in the text. Then, students can continue to practice using the graphic organizer as they read any text.

Introduce this activity by listening to the Have Fun Teaching Author’s Purpose Song. Next, students share what they know about author’s purpose. Then, students complete the activity individually or with a partner. Finally, students share about the authors and illustrators they learned about. Once finished, students continue their practice using the provided worksheet.
