About this resource

Description

Nouns are the naming words that hold a sentence together, and third graders meet them everywhere — in the stories they read, the reports they write, and the questions they answer on a test. This Fill in the Blank Nouns Worksheet gives students focused practice choosing the exact noun a sentence needs, including regular plurals, irregular plurals such as children and mice, and singular possessives formed with an apostrophe. Instead of naming a noun in isolation, students read the whole sentence, decide what the context calls for, and then write the correct form on the line.

The page is built in two parts so it moves from recognizing a correct noun to producing one. In Part A, students read six sentences and choose the noun that completes each one from three closely related forms printed underneath. In Part B, students become the editor: every sentence holds one noun that is written incorrectly, so students circle the mistake and rewrite it correctly on the line below. Print the worksheet, hand it out, and use the included answer key to check the work in a minute or two.

What’s Included

  • One printable Fill in the Blank Nouns Worksheet (PDF)
  • Part A: six fill-in-the-blank sentences with three noun choices each
  • Part B: four edit-the-sentence items covering plural and possessive nouns
  • A complete answer key on the final page

This 3rd grade nouns worksheet helps students in three ways. First, it builds accuracy, because choosing between puppy, puppies, and puppy’s forces students to notice how meaning changes with a single letter or apostrophe. Second, it strengthens editing, since Part B asks students to find and fix an error the same way they will when proofreading their own writing. Third, it connects grammar to real reading, because every item is a complete sentence rather than an isolated word list.

Teachers can use this page as a morning warm-up, a small-group review, a homework assignment, or an early-finisher activity. Parents can work through Part A out loud together and then let their child try Part B alone. For extra practice, ask students to write two new sentences of their own on the back of the page — one using a plural noun and one using a possessive noun — and then trade papers with a partner to check each other’s apostrophes.
