Sorting Words by Part of Speech
This noun, adjective, and verb activity turns parts of speech into a popcorn sorting game. Children read each popcorn word card and decide whether it names a person, place or thing, tells what something is like, or shows an action. Knowing the job each word does helps students write clear, detailed sentences. It also prepares them to spot nouns, adjectives and verbs in the books they read and to choose stronger words in their own writing.
How to Use the Noun, Adjective, and Verb Activity
Print and cut out the 24 popcorn cards and set out the bucket sort mat. Students take a card, read the word, and place it beside the NOUN, ADJECTIVE or VERB bucket, then check their sorting with the answer key. It works as a 1st grade adjectives activity and as quick review for second and third graders in a literacy center or small group.
