About this resource
Description
Conjunctions are the small but mighty words that join ideas together and help sentences flow. This Conjunctions Worksheet helps third-grade students learn to choose the right joining word — and, but, or, so, because, before, and until — to connect two ideas clearly. Learning to use conjunctions well is an important step toward writing longer, more interesting sentences instead of a string of short, choppy ones.
This 3rd grade conjunctions worksheet gives students focused practice in two ways. First, they read six sentences and write the best conjunction from a word bank to complete each one. Then they combine pairs of short sentences into a single, smoother sentence using the conjunction shown in parentheses. Read the directions together, remind students that a conjunction links two ideas, and let them work through each item at their own pace before checking with the answer key.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 word-bank sentences and 4 sentence-combining activities
This Conjunctions Worksheet helps students in three important ways. First, the word bank gives just enough support for children to reason about which conjunction fits, building confidence with coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Second, the sentence-combining activity moves students from recognizing conjunctions to actually using them in their own writing. Third, the friendly, uncluttered layout keeps the focus on the language, so learners can think about meaning instead of decoding a busy page.
For more practice, challenge students to find conjunctions in a favorite book and notice how they join ideas. Try a quick game where you say two short sentences and your child joins them out loud with and, but, or because. During writing time, encourage students to reread their work and combine two short sentences into one using a conjunction. These small habits help young writers build stronger, more detailed sentences over time.
