About this resource

Description

Building strong writers starts with helping students understand what makes a sentence whole, and this Creating Complete Sentences Worksheet gives third graders focused practice doing exactly that. A complete sentence needs two parts working together: a subject that names who or what the sentence is about, and a predicate that tells what the subject does or is. When students can spot both parts, they can tell the difference between a real sentence and a fragment, and they can turn scattered phrases into clear, complete thoughts.

This 3rd grade sentences worksheet presents eight groups of words under the title “Are They Sentences?” Some are complete sentences and some are fragments that are missing a subject or a predicate. Students read each one, and if it is already complete, they write “complete” on the line. If it is a fragment, they add the missing part to make it a whole sentence. Hand it out after a mini-lesson on subjects and predicates, or use it as a quick review, homework page, or literacy-center task. The included answer key makes checking fast.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 8 complete-and-incomplete sentence activities

This Creating Complete Sentences Worksheet helps children learn the skill in three ways. First, mixing complete sentences with fragments trains students to check every sentence for both a subject and a predicate instead of guessing. Second, rewriting fragments gives them hands-on practice adding the missing part, which strengthens their own writing. Third, the clear one-idea-per-line format keeps the focus on the skill so learners build confidence with each item.

Teachers and parents can extend the learning in playful ways. Cut apart subject cards and predicate cards and let kids mix and match them to build silly sentences. Challenge students to hunt for complete sentences in a favorite book and explain what makes each one work. During writing time, ask children to underline the subject and circle the predicate in their own sentences. A quick daily “fix the fragment” warm-up keeps the skill fresh all year.
