About this resource

Description

Hearing that cat and hat end the same way is one of the earliest and most important reading skills a child develops, and this Rhyming Worksheet gives Kindergarten students focused practice with it. Rhyming trains the ear to break a word into its beginning sound and its ending chunk, which is exactly the awareness children need before they can blend and decode words on their own. Every word on the page is a short, familiar one, so students can concentrate on the sound rather than on unfamiliar vocabulary.

This printable Rhyming Worksheet is a two-page download you can print and hand out immediately. In Part A, students read a word inside a green box — cat, bug, pig, and sun — then circle the one word in that row that rhymes with it. The two words that do not rhyme are chosen to sound close enough that children have to listen carefully rather than guess. In Part B, students draw a line from each word on the left to its rhyming partner on the right, matching bed, star, and tree with sled, car, and bee. Use it as morning work, as a literacy center, as small-group practice, or as a quick check after a read-aloud full of rhyme.

What’s Included

  • One printable Kindergarten worksheet, ready to print in black-and-white or color
  • Part A: four rows of circle-the-rhyming-word practice
  • Part B: three rhyming pairs to match with a line
  • Short, decodable words chosen for early readers
  • A complete answer key on page two

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • It builds phonemic awareness. Noticing that words share an ending sound teaches children that words are made of parts they can hear and change — the foundation of decoding.
  • It asks children to listen, not guess. The choices that do not rhyme are close cousins, so this kindergarten rhyming worksheet rewards careful listening rather than pattern-spotting.
  • It practices the skill two ways. Circling a rhyme and matching a pair use the same skill from different angles, which helps it stick.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Read each row aloud with your class before students pick up a pencil, stretching the ending sound so everyone hears it. After the page is finished, play a quick oral game: say a word and have children call out any rhyme they can think of, real or silly. Ask students to turn the page over and draw a picture of two things that rhyme, then label them. At home, hunt for rhymes in favorite picture books and nursery rhymes, and take turns making up rhyming pairs in the car or at the dinner table. Children who finish early can write one more word that rhymes with each boxed word.
