About this resource
Description
The Finding Rhyming Words Worksheet asks a first grader to hear the ending sound in a written word. Rhyming is the doorway skill of phonics: a child who notices that cake and lake end alike can swap a first letter and read a whole family of words at once. This page uses long vowel patterns, the families early readers meet as soon as the silent e appears.
The printable works in two passes. In Part A the child reads five short clues and draws a line from each word to the rhyme family it belongs to, so the rhyme has to be heard in the head rather than spotted in a picture. In Part B a fresh partner word is given for each family, and this time the child writes the whole word out. Every example in Part B is new, so neither part hands the other one its answer. Print it for a phonics center, morning work, or homework, and use the answer key on the last page to check it in seconds.
