About this resource

Description

Rhyming words share the same ending sound, and in 4th grade students learn to hear that sound even when a word has two or three syllables. This matching rhyming words worksheet helps students listen for the final syllable sound in longer words like station and vacation, and it shows that rhyming words do not always share the same spelling, as with bubble and trouble.

In Part A, students draw lines to match six words to their rhymes. In Part B, they read a sentence, find the word in bold print, and write the rhyming word from the word box. In Part C, students choose two rhyming pairs and write a sentence that uses both words of each pair. Students can say each word out loud to check that the endings truly sound alike before they connect the pair.

What’s Included

  • One rhyming worksheet page with three parts: matching, sentence completion, and sentence writing
  • Six multi-syllable rhyming pairs with mixed spellings
  • A word box with four rhyming answers used in context
  • A complete answer key with sample sentences

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

First, a 4th grade rhyming worksheet like this one trains students through matching longer rhyming words, so they learn to listen to the final syllable, which builds stronger phonological awareness. Second, rhyming pairs with different spellings remind students that sound and spelling are not always the same, which supports spelling and decoding. Third, writing original sentences with rhyming pairs gives students practice using vocabulary in context, a skill that carries over into poetry writing.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Use this matching rhyming words worksheet as a warm-up before a poetry unit, a literacy center activity, or homework practice. After students finish, invite them to find more two-syllable rhymes for each word in Part A, or to turn their Part C sentences into a short rhyming couplet. Reading the finished sentences aloud is a fun way to check the rhymes as a class.
