Description
An eighth is one of eight equal parts of a whole, and this Fractions Eighth Worksheet gives third graders ten chances to see that idea on paper. Six models at the top are already shaded, and students write the fraction each one shows. Four blank circles at the bottom each have a fraction printed above them, and students shade the circle to match. Half of the models are circles cut into eight wedges and half are grids cut into eight square cells, so children learn that an eighth is a share of the whole, not a single shape.
The sheet prints as two pages. Page one holds Part A and Part B with plenty of room to work, and every Part A answer is written on a fraction bar, with the numerator above the line and the denominator below it. Page two is the complete answer key with every fraction filled in and every circle shaded, so checking takes seconds. This fractions eighth worksheet keeps every denominator at eight while the numerators change from card to card, so a child has to count the shaded parts instead of following a pattern down the page.

There are three reasons this 3rd grade fractions worksheet helps children master eighths. First, naming a fraction and building one are different skills, and the sheet asks for both, so a student who can only read a shaded picture is caught early. Second, the two model shapes stop the common mistake of linking a fraction to one picture. Third, the denominator never changes, so all of the thinking goes into what the numerator counts.
Teachers and parents can extend the lesson in simple ways. Have a student fold a paper strip in half three times to make eight equal parts, color five of them, and match it to a card on the sheet. Ask which is larger, three eighths or five eighths, and how they know. Snack time works too: cut a sandwich or a tortilla into eight equal pieces and ask what fraction is left after two are eaten.
