Description
A fifth is one of five equal parts of a whole, and this Fractions Fifth Worksheet gives third graders ten chances to see that idea instead of just hearing it. Six models on the top half are already shaded, and students write the fraction each one shows. Four circles on the bottom half are blank, with a fraction printed above each, and students shade the circle to match. Half the models are circles cut into five wedges and half are bars cut into five cells, so a child learns that one fifth is a share of the whole and not a shape.
The sheet runs as two pages. Page one carries Part A and Part B on one page with room to work, and every answer in Part A is written on a fraction bar, so the numerator sits above the line and the denominator below it the way a fraction is really written. Page two is the complete answer key with every fraction filled in and every circle shaded, so the page is checked in seconds. This fractions fifth worksheet keeps every denominator at five while the numerators move around, so a child has to count the shaded parts rather than follow a pattern down the page.

There are three reasons this 3rd grade fractions worksheet helps children learn the skill. First, naming a fraction and building one are two different skills, and the sheet asks for both, so a student who can only read a shaded picture is caught here rather than on a test. Second, the two model shapes stop the common mistake of tying a fraction to one picture. Third, the denominator never changes, so all the thinking goes into what the numerator counts.
Teachers and parents can stretch the lesson easily. Ask a student to fold a strip of paper into five equal parts and colour three of them, then match it to a card on the sheet. Ask which is larger, two fifths or three fifths, and how they know. Snack time works too: five crackers on a plate, and one fifth of them is one cracker.
