Fruits of the Spirit – Love Writing Prompt Worksheet

Love is one of the nine fruits of the spirit, and for a fifth grader it means putting someone else’s needs right beside your own. Children can usually define the word long before they can recognise the moment that calls for it, and that gap is exactly where character instruction tends to stall. This fruits of the spirit writing prompt closes it by handing students a situation instead of a definition: they have to read a scene, work out what is really going on in it, and then argue in writing for what love would actually look like there.

Each page opens with a full-colour illustrated scene and no caption at all — the picture carries the whole story. Students study it, figure out the problem, and then write a paragraph on the ten ruled lines below explaining what is happening and how the kids in the scene could show love to fix it. Because nothing is spelled out for them, this love writing activity for kids works equally well as independent writing practice, a partner discussion starter, a morning-meeting opener, or a small-group character lesson. Three things make this pair of pages work harder than a sentence starter. First, inference comes before opinion: a wordless picture forces students to gather evidence from faces, posture and setting before they write a single word, which is the same skill their reading assessment tests. Second, the two scenes are deliberately different in tone — one serious, one genuinely funny — so students discover that love is not only for solemn moments, and the humour keeps reluctant writers engaged. Third, every response is an argument the student has to support, so each fruits of the spirit writing prompt produces a real paragraph with a claim and reasons rather than a one-line answer you cannot assess.

Teachers and parents can stretch these pages a long way. Have students act out the scene twice — once the way it would go without love, once the way it would go with it — and then write. At home, keep a page on the kitchen table and talk it through over dinner before anybody writes anything.
