Young readers love a story about a favorite toy, and that makes it a great place to practice finding details. This Hello Barbara Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives second graders a short story about a boy named Nathan and the soft cloth doll he names Barbara. Nathan reads to her, takes her on bike rides, holds tea parties on rainy days and keeps her safe from a puppy who thinks she is a chew toy. The story is written at a 2nd grade reading level, so students can spend their effort on understanding instead of decoding.
Students read the four-paragraph story on the first page, then turn to the question page and answer four multiple-choice items and one written response. The questions reach into every paragraph, from what Barbara looks like to why Nathan puts her up on a high shelf, and the last multiple-choice item asks for the main idea of the whole story. The written response asks how Nathan takes good care of Barbara and tells students to use two details from the text. A complete answer key follows.
