Two ponies who have never spent a night apart, a summer storm, and a gate with a tired latch: this Licorice and Lollipop Reading Comprehension Worksheet is built around an original two-page story about what happens when a herd of two suddenly becomes a herd of one. Fifth graders read how Licorice and Lollipop live shoulder to shoulder in the low pasture, how one of them slips through the open gate in the rain, and how the other one goes looking. Along the way the story carries real facts about how horses behave: why they turn their backs to a storm, what mutual grooming is, and how a pony uses its nose and its wide field of vision to keep track of the animals it trusts.
The sheet runs as four pages. The story fills the first two, so students get a genuine stretch of independent reading rather than a paragraph and a question.
