Long Vowel I Worksheet

The long i sound is one of the first long vowels a young reader has to pick out by ear, and this Long Vowel I Worksheet gives first graders two ways to practice it. Words such as tie, lime and slide all say the letter’s own name, while bell, mop and flag do not, and telling those apart by sound is the whole skill on this page.

Part A holds six clear pictures in two rows. A child says each picture name out loud, listens for the long i, and circles the three that have it. Part B moves the same sound into print: a four word box holds mice, night, ride and smile, and three short sentences each need one of them written on a roomy handwriting line. One word in the box fits no sentence at all, so the child has to read rather than guess. Print the page, work through Part A together, then let the student finish Part B on their own and check it against the included answer key.
