Description
A long vowel says its own name, and hearing that sound inside a word is the skill that unlocks a huge share of second-grade reading. This Long Vowels Sorting Worksheet gives students twelve everyday words and three sound columns, and asks them to listen their way through each one. The words are spelled with the patterns second graders are actually working on that year: silent e in tape and home, vowel teams in rain and boat, the ay in play and the ow in snow, and the igh in light. Sorting by sound rather than by spelling is what keeps students from guessing, because two words in the same column often look nothing alike.
The page opens with a word box holding all twelve words in a mixed-up order, so no student can place them by position. Below it sit three labeled columns, one for long a, one for long i and one for long o.
