The Magic Necklace Reading Comprehension Worksheet invites 5th grade readers to look closely at a purple stone that seems to glow from the inside. This magic necklace reading comprehension worksheet explains that the glow is not magic at all. It comes from nature and from the careful work of miners, gem cutters and jewelers who follow one amethyst from a hollow geode deep underground to a finished necklace.
Students read a two page nonfiction passage that walks through each step of the journey: how quartz gets its purple color, how crystals grow inside a geode, how a gem cutter grinds flat facets at exact angles, and how a jeweler builds a silver setting and adds a chain and clasp. After reading, students answer four multiple choice questions and write a short constructed response using details from the text. Use it for independent practice, small group reading, homework or a science and literacy center.
