Word families are the fastest route from single letters to whole words, and the Making New Words Worksheet puts that move in front of students one word at a time. When a child knows the rime -ock, a single new beginning sound turns it into sock, rock, clock, block and lock. That is five words learned for the price of one, and it is exactly the decoding habit first grade readers need before they meet longer text. This Making New Words Worksheet builds the habit with three families, fifteen real words and a printed word box that keeps every reader in the game.
The page is a sort. Fifteen decodable words are printed in a word box at the top, and three family headers sit below it: -ock, -an and -ing. Students read each word, hear the ending chunk, and write the word on a line under the family it belongs to. Because every word belongs to exactly one family, the task is self checking and the included answer key takes seconds to grade. The words are arranged out of order in the box, so students cannot match by position and have to read to sort.
