About this resource
Description
Time is measured with many different units, and third graders are expected to know how those units fit together. Sixty seconds make a minute, sixty minutes make an hour, twenty-four hours make a day, seven days make a week, and twelve months make a year. This Match the Time Units Worksheet gives students focused practice connecting equal amounts of time until those relationships become automatic. Once a child knows that a week is always seven days, questions about schedules, calendars, and elapsed time stop feeling like guesswork.
This 3rd grade measurement worksheet is organized into three short parts that build on one another. In Part A students draw a line to match six amounts of time to their equal amounts. In Part B they complete four sentences by converting a larger unit into a smaller one, which means multiplying by 60, by 7, or by 12. In Part C they solve two word problems and explain their thinking in writing. Print it as morning work, a math-center task, homework, or a quick review before a unit test.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 matching pairs, 4 unit-conversion sentences, and 2 written word problems
There are three reasons this Match the Time Units Worksheet helps children learn. First, the matching section builds instant recall of the equivalences students reuse in every later time problem. Second, the conversion sentences turn that recall into arithmetic, so children practice multiplying by 60, 7, and 12 in a context that carries real meaning. Third, the written responses ask students to justify an answer, which is exactly the kind of explanation assessments expect at this grade. The included answer key makes checking fast for teachers and parents.
Keep the practice going away from the page. Invite children to time an everyday routine with a stopwatch, then rewrite the result in a second unit, so ninety seconds becomes one minute and thirty seconds. Hang a calendar where a child can count the days until a birthday, then count that same span in weeks. Ask how many hours a favorite movie lasts, or how many months remain until summer. A quick unit-swap game at dinner, where one person names an amount of time and the other names an equal amount, turns these facts into something children enjoy.
