Description
Doubles are one of the first addition strategies a young mathematician can truly own, and this adding doubles worksheet gives first graders the focused practice they need to make those facts automatic. When a child knows that 6 + 6 = 12 without stopping to count, every other addition strategy gets easier: near doubles, making ten, and adding within 20 all lean on the same quick recall. This printable walks through the ten doubles facts from 1 + 1 all the way to 10 + 10, then turns them around so students have to find the missing addend instead of the sum.
Using this adding doubles worksheet takes almost no prep. Print it, hand it out, and let students work down the page. Part A prints each doubles fact as a horizontal number sentence with a roomy answer box, so children write the sum in a space that is easy to see and easy to grade. Part B keeps the same facts but hides one of the two addends, which pushes students to think about what makes a double a double rather than simply adding two numbers that happen to match. An answer key is included on the last page.
