About this resource
Description
This Milton the Green Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives 5th grade students a two-page original story and a full page of questions about it. Milton the Green is a traveling inventor who rolls from town to town in a green rowboat fitted with wagon wheels. He sells a great many gadgets, and he sells them cheaply — until the lanterns, ladders, and music boxes start to break. The story follows Milton as he learns from his rival, a careful toymaker, that a good reputation has to be earned.
About This Worksheet
The passage runs 774 words across two pages, which is the on-grade reading load for fifth grade, and it is measured to read at that level. Students then answer four multiple-choice questions and one written response. The questions are drawn from across both passage pages and each one asks for a different kind of thinking: a cause, a word meaning taken from context, a reason behind a character’s choice, and the main idea of the whole text. The written response asks students to compare how Milton and the toymaker worked and to support the comparison with two details from the story.
What’s Included
- An original two-page story written and measured at a fifth grade reading level
- An illustrated scene of Milton’s wheeled rowboat parked on the lakeshore
- Four multiple-choice questions covering cause and effect, vocabulary in context, detail, and main idea
- A compare-and-contrast written response with four writing lines and a sample answer
- A complete answer key that points back to the text
Why This Helps Kids
- It builds reading stamina. A two-page passage asks students to hold a story in mind across a page turn, just as a state reading test does.
- It teaches words from context. Amphibious and reputation are both defined inside the sentence that introduces them, so students practice the skill instead of reaching for a dictionary.
- The story carries a lesson worth keeping. Milton learns that careful, tested work matters more than quick sales, and his rivalry ends in friendship.
Ways To Use It
Use this 5th grade reading comprehension worksheet as independent practice, as a guided reading selection for a small group, or as a quick check before a comprehension unit test. Ask students to underline the sentence that answers each question before they fill in a bubble, which turns the page into evidence practice. The compare-and-contrast response works well as a partner activity, with each student naming the two details the other used. Parents and homeschool families can use the Milton the Green Reading Comprehension Worksheet at home and talk through the final question together.
