About this resource
Description
Almost every child has eaten one, and almost none of them know what the pan is actually doing. This grilled cheese reading comprehension worksheet hands fifth graders an original non-fiction passage about the science hiding inside the simplest sandwich there is: why bread has to dry before it can brown, what the butter really contributes, how gentle heat turns cheese into a smooth emulsion while high heat breaks it, and why a lid and a little patience beat a hot pan every time. Reading informational text closely and proving an answer from the page is the heart of fifth grade reading, and a familiar subject is the easiest place to practise it.
This 5th grade food science worksheet is a four-page set. The passage runs across pages one and two, page three holds the questions, and page four is the complete answer key. Four multiple-choice questions move from a stated detail to vocabulary in context, then to cause and effect, and finally to the main idea of the whole text, drawing on both passage pages rather than the first one alone. A two-part constructed response then asks students to explain why gentle heat makes a better sandwich and to back the explanation with two details from the passage. It works as a close-reading lesson, a science tie-in, or independent practice.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 1 original two-page informational passage about cooking a grilled cheese sandwich
- 4 multiple-choice questions and 1 two-part constructed response
Three things make this grilled cheese reading comprehension worksheet useful in a busy classroom. First, the passage is written and measured on grade level, so a fifth grader can read it independently. Second, it teaches two real academic words in context — the maillard reaction and emulsion — each defined inside the sentence that introduces it, which is exactly the skill state tests call determining the meaning of words as they are used in a text. Third, the topic does double duty: it is a reading lesson and a heat-and-matter science lesson at the same time.
Teachers and parents can keep the learning going in easy ways. Ask your student to write the three jobs heat does in their own words, in order. Toast one slice of bread dry and one with butter, then compare the two surfaces. Melt a little cheese slowly and a little cheese quickly, and describe the difference in writing. Or have students plan a sandwich of their own and explain which cheese they would pick and why.
